「〜をするつもり」や「つもり」を意味する英語の表現50選

仕事や学校で前もって考えていることを伝える時や何かをしようとした時、「〜をするつもり」と言いますが、他にも何か思い込んでいたり心がけている時など、様々な場面で「つもり」という言い方をします。かなり便利な日本語の表現ですが、英語で同じ状況にいたらどんな言い方をしますか?I will~を使うと決定してしまっているので、まだ考えている段階だとやや強いニュアンスになってしまいます。

また、結果を見て「そうするつもりではなかった」「そんなつもりではなかった」ととっさに言う時もありますね。I didn’t want to~「〜をしたくなかった」という意味になってしまうので、ニュアンスが変わってしまいますね。

本日は「するつもり」の様々な英語の言い方を始め、「そうするつもりです!」まで、ネイティブ・スピーカーで異文化コミュニケーションの専門家(米・仏・日)である筆者が30選紹介いたします。

(1) 前もって考えていることを表す「つもり」

to be (just) about to~

※「たった今」というニュアンスになります。

I’m about to leave the office.
「今からオフィスを出るつもりです。」

He is about to say something.
「彼が今何かを言おうとしています。」

It’s my intention to~
to have the intention to~
to have the intention of + ING

It’s my intention to succeed.
have the intention to
 succeed.

「今年の夏、ハワイに行くつもりです。」

It’s my intention to marry that woman.
I have the intention to marry that woman.
I have the intention of marrying that woman.
「彼女と結婚するつもりです。」

to intend to~

I intend to succeed.
「成功するつもりだよ。」

I intend to go to Hawaii this summer.
「今年の夏、ハワイに行くつもりです。」

I intend to marry that woman.
「彼女と結婚するつもりです。」

to plan to~
to plan on + ING

※二つとも全くほぼ同じ意味になります。「計画・予定している」というニュアンスになります。
plan toの方が若干「確か」に聞こえます。

I plan to succeed.
I’m planning on succeeding.
「成功するつもりだよ。」

I’m planning to go to Hawaii this summer.
I’m planning on going to Hawaii this summer.
「今年の夏、ハワイに行くつもりです。」

She is planning to do something for the holidays.
She is planning on doing something for the holidays.
「彼女はこの休みの間何かを予定しているよ。」

to mean~

to meanはどちらかというと過去(進行)形否定文に使われます。詳しくは(2)(3)をお読みください!

She means to win the game.
「彼女は試合に勝つつもりだよ。」

She means to call you tomorrow.
「彼女は明日電話をするつもりだよ。」

He means you no harm.
「彼は君に害を与えるつもりはないよ。」

He means it as a joke.
「彼は冗談のつもりで言ってるんだよ。」

I (seriously) mean it.
「私は真面目に言ってるつもりだよ。」

to be thinking of~
to be thinking about~

※二つともほぼ同じ意味ですが、to think aboutの方が「真剣に考えている」というニュアンスになります。

I’m thinking of going to Hawaii this summer.

「この夏ハワイに行くつもりだよ。」

I’m thinking of leaving the company.

「会社を辞めるつもりだよ。」

to aim to~

※「目指す」・「心掛ける」というニュアンスになります。

I aim to achieve my goals within 5 years.
「5年以内に目標を達成するつもりです。」

We aim to offer the best services in the world.
「世界一のサービスを提供しているつもりです。」

to aspire to~

※「志望する」・「志す」というニュアンスになります。

I aspire to become captain of the team this year.
「今年はチームキャプテンになるつもりです。」

I aspire to attain greatness.
「大成するつもりです。」

to be determined to~

※「強く決意する」という意味になります。

I am determined to work hard and get a promotion.
「死ぬ覚悟で仕事をして出席するつもりです。」

She is determined to win the competition.
「彼女は優勝するつもりです。」

to hope to~

※「〜したいと望む」という意味になります。

I hope to enter this school next year.
「この学校へ入学するつもりです。」

He hopes to get a promotion this year.
「彼は今年昇進するつもりです。」

If everything goes as planned, they hope to get married next year.
「全て計画通りいけば、二人は来年結婚するつもりです。」

If everything goes well, she hopes to graduate with honors.
「全てうまくいけば、彼女は優等で卒業するつもりです。」

I hope to get my master’s degree soon.
「近いうちに修士号を得るつもりです。」

(2)「〜つもりだった」

※基本的に(1)で紹介したフレーズを過去(進行)形にすればOKです!

I was just about to call you.
「たった今電話するつもりだったよ。」

I was going to do it later.
「後でやるつもりでした。」

I was only going to stay one year in Japan.
I was only planning on staying in Japan for one year.
「日本には一年だけ住むつもりでした。」

He was going to do to buy the groceries but it slipped his mind.
「彼は買い物をするつもりしたが、忘れたみたいです。」

He was thinking about doing the laundry but then he decided not to.
「彼は洗濯をするつもりでしたが、結局やらないことにしました。」

I was planning to go to the beach today but it’s raining.
I was planning on going to the beach today but it’s raining.
「ビーチに行くつもりでしたが、雨が降っています。」

He said Sunday 12th but he meant the 13th.
「12日の日曜日と言っていましたが、13日のつもりでした。」

I meant it as a joke.
I intended it as a joke.
「冗談のつもりでした。」

He aspired to attain greatness.
「彼は大成するつもりでした。」

She aimed to achieve her goals within 5 years.

(3)「〜つもりじゃなかった」

※基本的に(1)で紹介したフレーズを否定文にすればOKです!

I didn’t plan to go to Hawaii this summer.
I didn’t plan on going to Hawaii this summer.
「今年の夏はハワイに行くつもりはなかった。」

I didn’t plan on staying this long in Japan.
「こんなに長期間日本に滞在するつもりはなかった。」

I wasn’t planning on going to the beach today but it’s sunny.
It wasn’t my intention to go to the beach today but it’s a beautiful day.
「今日はビーチに行くつもりはなかったが天気が晴れている。」

I didn’t mean to hurt you.
It wasn’t my intention to hurt you.
「君に害を与えるつもりはなかったよ。」

I didn’t mean it seriously.
「真面目に言ったつもりじゃないよ。」

He didn’t aspire to become a doctor.
「彼は医者になるつもりはなかったよ。」

wasn’t hoping to get my master’s degree anytime soon.
「修士号をこんなに早く得られるつもりはなかった。」

(4) 実際はそうではないが,そうなっているような気持ちの「つもり」

He believes he is the smartest person in the room.
He thinks he is the smartest person in the room.
He is convinced he is the smartest person in the room.
「彼は自分がこの中で一番賢いつもりでいる。」
※この場合「思い込んで、勘違いしている」という意味になります。

He acted as if he was rich.
He pretends to be rich in front of people.
「彼は人前では金持ちのつもりでいる。」
※この場合「〜のふりをする」という意味になります。

Do it as if you were an actor.
「役者のつもりでやってごらん。」

Put yourself in the customer’s shoes/position/situation.
「お客さんのつもりで・立場から考えてごらん。」

(5) 「そう思っている」・「そう思いっていた」時の「つもり」

I think of myself as hard working and patient.
「自分は働き者で忍耐強いつもりです。」

I thought I had understood that.
「理解したつもりでした。」

I thought I’d sent you the email.
「メールを送っていたつもりでいました。」

Didn’t I send you the email yesterday? I thought I did.
「昨日メールを送らなかったっけ?送ったつもりだった。」

I thought I put money in my wallet.
「ポケットに財布を入れたつもりだった。」

(6) 「そうするつもりです」と英語で返す表現

That was my intention.
That’s what I was thinking to do.
I intend to do so.
I’m planning on doing so.
I’ll do it with that in mind.


日本語で便利な「するつもり」「つもり」英語では同じことを言うのに沢山の表現がありましたね!それぞれ若干ニュアンスが変わってきますが、例文を覚えていれば、いずれ使いこなせるようになります!
