 「違和感」を覚えた時に、その気持ちを英語で伝えるのはそう簡単ではないと思います。それは、日本語のように「違和感」に当たる英語の単語がないからです。A feeling of uneasinessやan uncomfortable feelingと言えますが、日本語ほどシンプルではありません。

人は誰でも何となくしっくりこなかったり、何かが食い違っている印象を受けることはよくある上、的確な説明ができなかったり、理由がはっきりしないことも沢山あると思います。

また、なかなか物事になじめない時、居心地が悪い時もあります。そんな時、英語でこの様な気持ちを伝えようとすると困ると思います。

本日は、「この違和感をもっと簡単に英語で伝えられるはず！」と思う方のために、ネイティブ・スピーカーで異文化コミュニケーションの専門家（米・仏・日）である筆者が、表現を80選紹介いたします。

(1) 五感を通した「違和感」

to feel (a little/slightly/a bit)~

It feels strange/weird/odd/funny/bizarre/peculiar.
「奇妙な感じがする。」

It feels a little/a bit awkward.
「少しぎこちない気がする。」

It feels a little unnatural.
It doesn’t feel very natural.
「（少し）不自然な気がする。」

It doesn’t feel right.
「何か違うような気がする。」

It feels wrong.
「間違っている気がする。」

I feel out of place in this kind of place.
「こういうところでは自分が場違いな場所にいる気がする。」

I feel uneasy in this kind of place.
「こういうところでは気が落ち着かない。」

This feels familiar to me.
「何となく親近感あるよ。」

to sound (a little/slightly/a bit)~

It sounds strange/weird/odd/funny/bizarre/peculiar.
「異様に聞こえる。」

It sounds a little/a bit awkward.

to taste (a little/slightly/a bit)~

(2) 何となくしっくりこない、食い違っている印象を受けた時の英語の「違和感」

Something’s missing.
「何かが足りない気がする。」

Something’s out of place.
「何かが場違いな気がする。」
※特に何かを見たり、観察して気づくときに使います。

Something’s off/wrong/odd/weird.
「何かが不自然だ。」

It’s odd but I have no idea why.

「おかしいと思うけど、何故かが分からない。」

※自分が思っている基準と違う時に使います。

(3) 理由がはっきりしない時の「違和感」を英語で表す

I just have a feeling.
「何となく、ただの違和感だよ。」

Something is bothering me.
「なんか気になる。」

I have this uncomfortable feeling.
I have a sense of discomfort.
「違和感を感じる。」
※特に落ち着かない時に使います。

I can’t (quite) put my finger on it.
「理由が（はっきり）分からない。」

(4) 居心地が良くない時や何かが苦手な時に使う表現

I don’t think I belong here.
「どうもここは私には場違いな気がする。」

I don’t really fit with others.
「他の人達と溶け込めない。」

I’m out of my comfort zone.
I’m like a fish out of water.
「居心地の良い場所から出てしまったように感じる。」

I’m out of my element.
「こういうのは苦手です。」

I’m not familiar with this.
「これについては親近感ないよ。」

(5) 「違和感ない？」と聞かれて「違和感ない！」と返す英語のやり取りの例

– Does that feel right to you?
「これで正しいと思う？」
– It feels right to me!
「違和感ないよ！」

– Is that supposed to be like that?
「これは本来こうあるべきものなの？」
– I don’t see anything strange.
「おかしな所は何も見えないよ。」

– What’s wrong with this picture?
「この場を見て何か違和感ない？」
– Nothing!
「ないよ！」

– It’s not quite right, is it?
「若干〜が違うような気がしない？」
– I don’t see any problem.
「何も問題ないと思うよ。」

– Something’s out of place, isn’t it?
「何かが場違いな気がしない？」
– Really? I don’t think so.
「そう？そんなことないと思うよ。」

– I’m out of my element here. Aren’t you?
「こういうのは苦手だよ。君は？」
– I’m OK. It feels totally familiar to me!
「親近感あるから大丈夫だよ。」

これだけ表現を知っていれば、あらゆる「違和感」を英語で簡単に伝えらることはできると思います！

特に理由がなかったり、的確な説明がし辛い時に役立つ簡単な表現も沢山ありました。Why?と聞かれて、「何となく」と返したい時はNo reason, it’s just a feelingと言ってみましょう。それ以上は聞かれないと思います。
