「遊ぶ」とplayは同じ意味?友人を気楽に誘う英語85選

「遊ぶ」英語で訳そうとする時、とっさに思い浮かぶのがto playだと思います。しかし、「来週遊ぼうよ!」をLet’s play next week!と言ってしまうと、幼稚に聞こえる可能性かあるいはPlay what?「何して?」という答えが返ってくくる可能性があります。

また、よく耳にする間違いがI play snowboard in winter「冬はスノーボードをします」です。勿論、英語でスノーボードをして「遊ぶ」という意味は通じますが、ネーティブ・スピーカーからすると若干不自然に聞こえます。スノーボードのような趣味は確かに楽しいのですが、動詞のplayは使わなくてもいいのです。

では、動詞のplayはどの様に使えるのでしょうか?そして、どんな風に英語で友人を気楽に誘うことができるでしょう?
本日は、to playの正しい使い方と友人を気楽に誘うフレーズを、ネイティブ・スピーカーで異文化コミュニケーションの専門家(米・仏・日)である筆者が85選紹介いたします。

(2) 一人の友人を誘う時に使う英語の「遊ぶ?」
・相手の予定をまず聞く

(1) Playの正しい使い方

活動(ゲーム、スポーツなど)に参加する

注:to playはルールに従って遊ぶゲームやスポーツの時に使います。つまり、I play snowboardは不自然なのです。
何故ならゴルフやテニスと違って、特に遊ぶルールがないからです。I snowboard in winter又はI go snowboarding in winterと言います。オリンピックなどでは判定やスコアがありますが、その場合はto compete「競い合う」などを使います。他にも、to swim、 to hike、 to ski、 to surf、to jogなども同じです。

The Japanese team played against the American team.
「日本はアメリカと対戦したよ。」

Well played!
「ナイスプレイ!」

I play golf on the weekend.
「週末はゴルフをします。」

Do you play soccer?
「サッカーはしますか?」

Let’s play Poker for money!
「お金を賭けてポーカーしましょう!」

Let’s play hide-and-seek!
「隠れん坊をしましょう!」

My kids love playing video games.
「子供たちはテレビゲームをするのが大好きです。」

The baby is playing with the teddy bear.
「赤ちゃんはぬいぐるみで遊んでいます。」

The children are playing in their room.
「子供達は部屋で遊んでいます。」

楽器・音楽を弾いたり、音楽を流す

She plays the violin beautifully.
「彼女はバイオリンを立ても美しく引きます。」

Music is playing from the other room.
「隣の部屋から音楽が流れてくる。」

Could you  play the CD again?
「CDをもう一度再生してください。」

いたずら、悪ふざけなど

They played a dirty trick on me by locking me in the room for hours!
「あいつらひどいよ!部屋に何時間も閉じ込められたよ!」

He played a practical joke on me.

※アメリカのスラングです。他にも、Stop teasin’!などもあります。

役割を果たす、出演する様

「あの役者はよく難しい役を演じる。」

He played the innocent when he was asked about the mistake.
「ミスについて聞けれたら、彼は惚けた。」

The sun plays an important role in our lives.   
「太陽は我々の生活に欠かせない役目を果たしています。」

The dog played dead when he heard a big noise.

映画の上映やコンサートの公演

The movie is playing in every theatre.

(2) 友人を誘う時に使う英語の「遊ぶ?」

相手の予定をまず聞く

「今月の16日は予定入ってる?」

注:Is your schedule available/free?は「いつ空いていますか?」を直訳してしまっているため、間違いです。

「普段どの日が空いてる?」

明確な案が特にない時の誘い方

We should get together (sometime soon).
We should hang out (sometime soon).
「(いつか)予定合わせて遊ぼうよ。」

Do you feel like doing anything (this weekend)?
Do you want to do something (this weekend)?
「(今週末)何かしたい?」
feel likeは「〜をする気分?」という意味です。

Do you want to hang out (this Saturday)?
Do you feel like hanging out (this Saturday)?
Do you want to meet up

「(今週の土曜日)遊ぶ?」
hang outはスラングで「気楽に時間を過ごす」という意味になります。
他にもchill out「リラクスすること」があり、時にはchillaxchillrelaxの造語)も耳にします。

Would you like to do something (sometime next week)?
「(来週あたり)何かしたい?」
Do you want to~Would you like to~に置き換えることで少し丁寧な問い方になります。

Let’s set up something (next week).
「(来週)何か計画して遊ぼうよ。」

Didn’t we say we were going to do something (soon)?
「この前、近いうちに何かするって言ってなかったっけ?」

What did you have in mind for this weekend?
「(今週末)何がしたい?」

明確な案がある時の誘い方

I was thinking we could (go to the beach this Sunday). What do you think?
「一緒に(海にでも行こう)かと考えていたんだけど。どう?」

I was thinking of catching a movie (after school). Do you want to join me?
「(学校の後)映画にでも行こうかと考えているんだけど。一緒に来る?」

Do you want to play tennis this weekend?
「今週末テニスでもしようか?」

How about a movie (this weekend)?
Do you want to go see a movie (this weekend)?
Do you want to catch a movie (this weekend)?
「今週末映画でも見に行く?」

I’m going to see a movie tomorrow. Do you want to come with me?
「明日映画見に行くけど、一緒にどう?」

Do you want to grab coffee sometime soon?
「近いうちにお茶でもする?」
grabは本来「つかむ」という意味です。食事や一杯飲みに行く時に使います。

Do you want to grab a bite to eat today?
Do you want to have lunch with me today?
Do you feel like grabbing/having lunch today?

「お昼一緒にどう?」

Let’s grab some food after the meeting.
「会議の後にお昼を食べに行こう。」

Do you want to go for a hike one day?
Do you want to go hiking one day?
「いつかハイキングに行く?」

Want to go skiing this winter?
「今年の冬スキーに行きたい?」

We should go check out that new Indian restaurant sometime.
「いつかあの新しく開店したインド料理店に行こうよ。」

自分の仲間との計画にもう一人の友人を誘う

We usually go out for drinks after work on Friday. You’re welcome to join us anytime.
「毎週金曜日は皆んなで飲みに行ってるけど、いつでもおいでよ。」

We are having a dinner party at our place next Friday. We’d be happy to have you.
「来週の金曜日、家でパーティーするけど、是非来てよ!」

We are going hiking next Saturday. Do you want to join us?

「来週の土曜日皆んなでハイキングに行くけど、一緒にどう?」
Would you care to (come with us/join us)?は最も丁寧な言い方になります。

Do you want to come with us to the town festival?
「街の祭りに行くけど、私達と一緒に来る?」

My friends and I are meeting after the seminar. Would you like to come?
「会議の後友人達と会うけど、一緒に来る?」

誘い方の例

What are you up to this weekend? How about a movie?
「今週末何かしてる?映画でもどう?」

Are you doing anything after school? I was thinking of catching a movie. Do you want to join me?
「学校の後予定ある?一緒に映画でもどう?」

What are you up to this Saturday? We are going hiking. Do you want to join us?
「今週の土曜日何かしてる?皆んなでハイキング行くけど一緒にどう?」

(3) 数人の友人をいっぺんに誘う時に使う表現

I’m going to the mall to buy some clothes. Does anyone want to come with me?
「服買いにモールに行くけど、誰か一緒にどう?」

Do you guys want to get together sometime soon?
「近いうちに皆んなで遊ばない?」

We should all hang out outside of work.
We should all get together outside of work.
「仕事の外で皆んなで遊ぼうよ。」

Who’s up for dinner tonight?
Anyone up for dinner tonight?
Who wants to have dinner tonight?

「誰か一緒に夕食はどう?」

I’m thinking of organising a welcome party for Mai soon. What do you  (guys) think?
「マイのためにパーティーを計画しようと考えてるんだけど、皆んなどう思う?」

I’ve decided to organise a party for Mai. Any suggestions?
「マイのためのパーティーを計画することにしたよ。誰か提案ある?」


日本語と英語の「遊ぶ」は場合に寄ってかなり意味が違いましたね!そして、友人を誘う時は、ゲームや特定のスポーツを一緒に楽しむ時以外の時はplayは使わないのです。

次回から英語で友人を誘う時は、「遊ぶ」気持ちに加え、ここで紹介した表現を使ってみてください。そして、特に明確なアイデアがない場合は相手の都合を聞いたら、What do you like to do?と聞くことを忘れないでください。その方が共に楽しめるものが見つかるはずです。

これで、英語でも友人と「遊ぶ」ことができます!
