日本語では「無理」と言う表現をよく耳にしますが、主に次の様な時に使います：

・物事の筋道が立たず道理に合わない場合
・実現するのが難しい・ほぼ不可能な場合
・強いて行う・押しきる場合

また、最近では、若い世代は「やろうとすればできるかもしれないが、やりたくない」場合にも「無理」を使うようになりました。

英語では、impossibleやunreasonableなどの単語がありますが、残念ながら上記の全ての場合に当てはまりません。例えば、「（限界なので）もう無理！」と言いたい場合は、I can’t…anymore!やI’ve had it up to here!などの表現があります。果たして、英語では他の場面に合わせた「無理」の表現はどの様なのがあるのでしょうか？

1. 物事の筋道が立たず道理に合わない「無理」

「無理を言われても困る」と言う意味の表現

I wish I could help you but I simply can’t.
「手伝いたいけど私には無理です。」

I want to help you but you’re asking me to do the impossible.
「手助けしたいけど、私に不可能なことを要求しています。」

Please understand that what you are asking me is unreasonable.
「あなたが私に求めていることは不合理だと言う事を理解してほしい。」

I’m afraid I’m uncomfortable with writing a letter of recommendation for you.
「不快に感じますので、あなたの為の為に推薦状を書くのは無理があります。」

Your request puts me in a (very) difficult position.
「貴方の要求は私を苦境に立たされます。」

I understand but you are putting me in an awkward position.
「 分かりますが、私を厄介な立場に置くことになります。」

Unfortunately, I’m the wrong person for the task.
「残念ながら、私ではその任務は無理です。」

Given the circumstances, I understand your anger/frustration.
「この様な状況なので、あなたの怒り・不満は理解できます。」

He is understandably skeptical.

She has a good reason to be angry at you after what you have done.

Her anger is justified since she did all the work.

Even though his reaction was excessive, his frustration can be understood.

「無理な言いがかり」と言う意味の表現

The customer is making an impossible demand/request.
「顧客は不可能な要求をしてきました。」

That doesn’t seem like an unreasonable demand/request since the task is within my job description.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept your unreasonable demands.

2. 実現するのが難しい・ほぼ不可能な「無理」

「相手に無理な要求をする」時の表現

If it’s not too much trouble, could you give me a hand?
「ご迷惑でなければ、手を貸していただけませんか？」

I am aware this might sound like an impossible task but do you mind helping me?
「不可能な仕事のように聞こえるかもしれませんが、手伝ってくれませんか?」

I know it seems like an impossible request but I need everyone’s assistance.
「無理なお願いだと思いますが、皆さんのご協力が必要です。」

I’m so sorry for asking you such a daunting task.
「このような気の遠くなるような仕事をお願いして本当に申し訳ありません。」

I know this is a lot to ask but could you send me the report by 7pm?

I fully understand I’m asking you the impossible.

「無理を承知で、引き受ける」時の表現

That sounds impossible but I’ll do my best.
「難しそうですが、なんとかやってみます。」

That sounds fundamentally impossible but let me give it a shot.
「それは根本的に無理だと思いますが、やってみます。」

That seems like an inherently unfeasible thing but I will give it a try.
「それは本質的無理なことのように思えますが、試してみます。」

I’ll do everything I can but I can’t guarantee anything.

We will accept the task but we can’t make any promises.

3.「強いて行う・押しきる」意味の「無理」

「強引に実現させると大きな問題が起こる」・「もう無理がきかない」と言う意味の表現

You crammed so much stuff that the bottom of the box cracked.
「無理に物を詰め込むから箱の底が壊れたよ。」

Be careful not to overpack the freezer.
「冷凍庫に無理に詰め込まないように注意してください。」

I think that’s enough. We should stop here.
「これ以上は無理です。ここで止めましょう。」
※「それ以上やる必要はありません」と言う意味にです。

It looks like you’ve reached your limit.
「それ以上は無理の様ですね。」
※「限界を達した」と言う意味になります。

The decision was forced on them and no one is happy about it.
「その決断は彼らに無理に押しつけられたので皆んな不満です。」

Turn the handle but don’t force it!
「ハンドルを回して下さい。でも決して無理にやらないで！」

If you force it (any) further, the glass will break.

「夜には頂上につけますか？」
– That’s going be very difficult.
