英語のappreciate（名詞：appreciation） はラテン語のappretiare「値段をつける」が由来です。「価値が上がる」・「評価増」と言う意味でも使われるようになり、後に「評価する」・「価値を認める」と言う意味でも使われるようになりました。

appreciateは特にビジネスでお礼をする時に良く使います。appreciationは「感謝」・「真価」などの意味になりますので、どちらかと言うとフォーマルな言い方で使います。あくまで、「相手の価値を認める」意味の「感謝」ですので、お願い事をする際にもappreciateは利用できます。また、否定文で使うと、「やめてほしい」・「気に入らない」と言う意味になります。

1.「評価する」・「鑑賞する」と言う意味のappreciate

4. お礼の時に使うappreciate

I appreciate your concern but I’ll be fine.
「ご心配はありがたいですが、大丈夫です。」
※I appreciate yourの後は名詞が来るので、「あなたの〜の価値」を指します。

I really appreciate your helping me with this project.
「このプロジェクトにご協力いただき、本当に感謝しています」
※I appreciate yourの後は動名詞（gerund）が来ます。

We appreciate you coming to this meeting today.
「本日はこの会議にお越しいただきありがとうございます。」
※I appreciate youは「あなた自身の価値」を指します。

We sincerely appreciate your feedback.
「皆様のご意見に心より感謝申し上げます。」

5. お願い・頼み事の時のappreciate

I know you must be busy but I would appreciate your advice.

The Takeaway（要点）:

英語でappreciateは元は、「値段をつける」と言う意味でした。そこから、「人や物の価値を認める・十分理解する」・「評価する」と言う意味になりました。ですので、お礼の際に使われる理由も理解できると思います。

また、appreciateを否定文で使うと「評価しない」と言う意味になり、現在の意味では「気に入らない」と言うニュアンスになります。つまり、相手に何かをやめて欲しい時は、I don’t appreciate (it)と言う丁寧な表現が使えます。
