俳優のジョージ・クルーニーが出演しているNespressoの広告で最後に“Nespresso, what else?”と耳にしたことはあると思います。このwhat else?は英語で「当然ですよね？」と訳せます。「ネスペレッソ以外に何も必要ないでしょ？」、「ネスペレッソ以外ないでしょ？」などのニュアンスが伝わります。
日本語で「当然」は「当たり前の出来事」や「当たり前であるさま」を表す時に使います。英語でも、この二つの意味を持つ表現はちゃんとあります。読者の皆さんはいくつご存知ですか？
