日本語で「許可」・「承認」・「認可」などを耳にすると、「ゴーサイン」という表現が思い浮かびますが、これは和製英語の一つで、ネーティブスピーカーは使いません。「ゴーサイン」に一番近い英語の表現はthe green-lightやthe go-aheadになります。もっと一般的に、「許可」・「承認」・「認可」を英語で表すには他の動詞と名詞があります。これらをマスターすると、「禁止」に関連する表現も作れます。
英語で「許可を得る」と言いたいときは、大抵、ask、get、obtain、requestやreceiveなどの動詞と一緒に使います。「許可を与える」と言いたいときは、give、grant、provideを使います。「許可が必要」と言いたいときは、need、requireを使います。また、単語によってhaveを使うこともあります。ただし、collocation（よく一緒に使われる単語の組み合わせ）には少し気をつけましょう！
